My Craft Space Makeover Goals | Craft Room Challenge 2018

Craft Space Makeover Goals | Craft Room Challenge 2018

Happy new year, friends!

We just got home on Monday from visiting my family for the holidays, & I spent that afternoon taking down all of our Christmas decorations & cleaning up our place a little bit. I had so much fun doing projects & video tutorials for Christmas for you guys, but I have to admit that our apartment got a little messy due to my creations!

So when some of my crafty blogging friends suggested doing a challenge together where we’d organize our craft spaces & give them a little bit of love after the crazy holiday season, I knew it would be just the thing for me!

We’re calling this the Craft Room Challenge, and every Wednesday this month all of us hosts will be going live on our blogs sharing our goals for each week & giving you guys updates on our progress! I’ll be linking to all of the hosts at the end of my post, so be sure to check them out!

And if you want to follow along with our weekly challenges, we’ll be sharing those on Instagram using the hashtags #craftroomchallenge and #confessyourmess. You can find me on Instagram here!

Here’s is the teaser video for our challenge in case you want to see what we’re up against!

And we also did a longer introduction video for the challenge where we show you our faces. Can you find me in it?!

Alright, let’s talk about why I am doing this challenge & what I hope to accomplish with it!

MY CURRENT CRAFT SPACE STRUGGLES

I say craft space as opposed to craft room because I don’t currently have a room dedicated to my craft projects. My husband & I live in Los Angeles, which means rent & housing prices are expensive. So we’ve made our home in a beautiful one-bedroom apartment that came with a bonus room (a den) & access to a small storage area in another part of our complex.

So why can’t I just make the den my craft room? Let me be honest. We plan to be here for a good long while, & we also want to start a family within the next few years, which means the den will inevitably become a second bedroom for the kiddos. And I am way too practical to buy furniture for this space knowing I’ll have to downsize whenever that time comes. So I’d rather tackle my problems now, and purge & organize the best I can in order to figure out the best way for me to have a creative space in our apartment without depending on having a totally separate room for it.

Alright, let’s get into my goals & show you what my apartment looks like right now. I do want to say that it is usually not this bad, but as soon as I started shooting & editing all the videos for my Christmas crafts, it started looking like my closets upchucked film equipment & craft supplies!

MY OVERALL CRAFT SPACE MAKEOVER GOALS LIST + BEFORE PICTURES

Goal #1- Put things away & clean up

Some of my supplies will need to go into our storage space, & some other things just need to get put away in our apartment! I want things to look tidy in the end for sure, because I’m not too happy with the way things are now.

Goal #2- Sort through & purge all of my supplies

I know there are some craft supplies I either don’t need, will never use, or maybe they just don’t work anymore.

I especially want to focus on my scrapbook paper stash & material stash for this part as I know there are some things I’ve been holding on to that I don’t need!

Goal #3- Expand on the organization systems I already have

The best example for how I want to accomplish this is in our hallway closet. I have a set of rustic baskets that I use to organize all of my DIY tools & household supplies. They work very well for our needs!

However, the basket holding all of my tools gets easily cluttered, so I’d love to develop a better system for storing my tools in there after I’m done with a project.

Goal #4- Create a dedicated area for in-progress projects

I say this because right now, I have a few small in-progress projects either sitting on my kitchen table, dresser, coffee table, or stashed away in one of my hallway cupboards. You can see the pictorial evidence of this below!

Solution Idea: Perhaps another basket like this one I currently have in my bedroom?

Goal #5- Organize & find a place for the rest of my creative supplies & tools

Then there are other creative tools we have out at the moment, such as my husband’s film equipment that I use for blogging now, among other things! I’d love to find a good place to store these where they will be out of the way, but will also be easily accessible for when we need them.

Goal #6- BONUS! Clean up my desk area in our den

One thing that’s been on my wish list for a while is to get a secretary desk for my dining room area that can hide our clutter, including our printer & all of our other desk supplies. Our current desk in the den holds a lot of creative supplies like pens, tape, and printer and photo paper. I’d love to start cleaning out this corner of the den by getting rid of the wire shelving unit & cleaning off the top of this desk!
